ORNL's Turner receives fellowship to conduct environmental research
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Feb. 28, 1996 — Dr. Ralph Turner, senior staff member in the Environmental Sciences Division of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has received a one-year fellowship to conduct environmental research in Florida.
Turner will conduct his research at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Research Laboratory in Gulf Breeze, Fla. He will study the role of bacteria in the recovery of mercury-contaminated aquatic systems. Some of his work will be conducted along East Fork Poplar Creek in Oak Ridge.
He has worked at ORNL since 1975, spending most of the last decade supporting environmental restoration activities at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. Turner earned a bachelor's degree in geology from Boston University, and a master's degree and doctorate in oceanography from Florida State University.
ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corp.
