S. Marshall Adams
S. Marshall Adams (right), a research staff member in ORNL's Environmental Sciences Division, directs the
division's biological indicators research programs. He also serves on the adjunct faculty at the
University of Tennessee and Duke University. He received
his Ph.D. degree from the University
of North Carolina. His recent studies have included effects of various types of
contaminants on key fish populations and the significance of these effects on stream, river, and
reservoir ecosystems. He has published scientific reports on predator-prey interactions in aquatic
systems, health indicators of aquatic organisms, and the effects of environmental stress on fish.
He has served as an associate editor for the Transactions of the American Fisheries
Society and is a book editor for the Ecological Society of America. Adams was recently
awarded the annual prize from the Association of American Publishers for co-editing the
outstanding book of the year in biological sciences, Biodiversity of the Southeastern United
States: Aquatic Communities. Currently, he is an associate editor for the International
Society of Aquatic Ecosystem Health. He has recently completed a book entitled Biological
Indicators of Stress in Fish. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Fishery Research
Biologists.
