ORNL/ADFAC Volunteer House Build

Some 40 ORNL staff and ATLC members enjoyed a beautiful Opening Day of the ORNL/ADFAC volunteer house build in Oak Ridge. When the team arrived
onsite, the concrete block foundation was up and insulated, ready for construction to commence. The ORNL team divided up into 3 project teams, one for installing the floor, one to build the exterior walls, and one to construct the back porch.

In the middle of the day was a wonderful lunch provided by the Robertsville Baptist Church, one of our teaming partners in this effort. By the end of the day, the floor was completed, the exterior walls built and raised, the interior walls laid out ready for construction next week, and the back porch finished. Our team also got the opportunity to meet the ADFAC homeowner, Carly Gilbert, as she worked alongside us throughout the morning

Based on the excellent progress made this week, the schedule for Saturday, May 19 will include Raising the Roof on the house (setting roof trusses and putting on sheathing/tarpaper), constructing and installing interior walls, and beginning the exterior siding. Come join the fun!

Team UT-Battelle supports ADFAC

Team UT-Battelle has supported ADFAC's housing and social services programs for many years through support of their home rehabilitation work camps and their annual community-wide Feed the Need fundraiser.

Summer work camps are sponsored each year by ADFAC, where hundreds of youth from across the US come to rural appalachia and do home repairs and rennovations for low-income families. UT-Battelle has provided team members, donations for construction materials, and staff support for the ADFAC organization. The most recent work camp was located in the Oliver Springs area and over 50 projects were completed in a two week period in Anderson and Morgan counties.

The Feed the Need fundraiser is an annual event where local restaurants join in on a specified day to donate a portion of their proceeds to ADFAC and their families in need. This past year, not only did UT-Battelle serve as a sponsor for the event, the ORNL cafeteria joined in as one of the restaurants, allowing employees to be part of the fundraiser right here at home.
