The ESH&Q directorate is responsible for a wide range of programs and services at the Laboratory. We provide support programs and services in the following areas:

  • Environmental Management — Pollution prevention, waste management, effluent management, regulatory review, reporting, permitting, and other environmental management programs
  • Nuclear and Facility Safety — Services in nuclear and non-nuclear facility safety, accelerator safety, fire protection, criticality safety, safety analysis, construction safety and readiness review
  • Occupational Medicine — Full occupational health care including patient care, laboratory procedures, medical evaluations, physical therapy, occupational vision, emergency response, immunizations, hazard assessment, and health counseling
  • Wellness Program — Promotes a healthy lifestyle among ORNL employees by reducing health risk behaviors and focusing on fitness and exercise, nutrition, stress reduction, disease awareness, weight management, and sports activities
  • Quality — Integration of quality requirements throughout the Lab's multiple management systems to ensure the appropriate implementation of quality-related requirements
  • Radiological Protection — Activities and support services established to support line managers in achieving excellent performance in radiation protection and in ensuring compliance with ORNL and DOE regulations
  • Records Management — Activities and processes to provide adequate, compliant, and proper documentation of research and support activities at ORNL
  • Standards Based Management — The system that translates laws, orders, and regulatory requirements into Laboratory-wide subject area documents (procedures and guidelines) that are current, accurate, and relevant to the work being performed by staff
  • Training & Qualification — Training to provide employees and non-employee staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform their jobs safely, effectively, and efficiently with minimal supervision
  • Worker Safety and Health — Services and processes to identify, evaluate, and control hazards in the workplace by providing direct technical assistance to those conducting work, delivering products and services related to industrial hygiene and occupational safety
