Alan Wintenberg is a member of the development staff of the Instrumentation and
Controls Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Since joining the Laboratory, his main
responsibilities have been the development of application specific integrated electronics
for robotics and high energy physics. He holds a B.S. in Engineering Physics and an M.S.
and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, all from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His
dissertation concerned the development of wideband, low-noise current preamplifiers for
measurement of low-level prebreakdown current in dielectrics and was done under the
direction of Dr. T. V. Blalock. His most recent assignments at the laboratory have
included serving as project manager for the Whole Arm
Obstacle Avoidance (WAOA) and the WA98
Lead Glass projects. The WAOA project involved designing custom integrated circuits
and incorporating them into a computer-controlled multi-sensor system which can collect
proximity data in real time in order to protect a robot arm from collisions. The Lead
Glass project included the development of two complex ASICs which were then incorporated
in a system of readout electronics for a 10,000 channel lead glass particle detector. He
is currently involved in designing ASICs for PHENIX ,
wireless and optical sensing applications. He is a member of the IEEE and is an Adjunct
Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University
of Tennessee, Knoxville.
