One thrust of the Materials MicroCharacterization Collaboratory (MMC) is the development and implementation of both commercial and specialty collaboration and teleconferencing techniques.  The MMC strives to acquaint potential and actual collaborators with the features of these techniques.  These techniques include audio and video communication and remote control of instrumentation.  The experiences of the MMC with these various techniques, as well as links to additional information, are documented

Several telecommunication programs offer audio broadcast capability.  It has been the MMC's experience that while the human eye is tolerant of dropouts and data loss in visible images, the human ear is much more sensitive to data loss.  Almost all audio broadcast programs experience data loss.  For that reason, the MMC continues to utilize telephones for audio communication.  However, information on the telecommunication programs offering audio broadcast is presented.

The differentiating factor between telecommunication programs offering video broadcast is image size and network bandwidth utilized, which are necessarily related by the compression algorithm used by the broadcast.  It has been MMC's experience that while image size of 120 X 160 pixels can be utilized, image size of 320 X 240 or even 640 X 480 pixels are desirable.

Electronic notebooks are still in their infancy stage.  Functionality, user interfaces, and robustness are the discriminating factors.  Most electronic notebooks are custom written software.

Remote tours are a methodology for familiarizing a user with facilities before their visit.  These tours provide an image of the facility, narrative about the facility, and navigation around the facility. This allows the user to become familiar with the facility layout and instruments prior to arriving on-site.

Web based control of instruments is the most challenging and difficult aspect of the MMC project.  While there are one or two commercial instrument control programs, most are still custom software.
