Announcement

A forum for communication among agencies, policymakers, and the scientific community

  • Learn about national priorities in research and nanoscale science and engineering from key Senators and Representatives, the President's Science Advisor, and funding agency and scientific community leaders
  • Learn about research opportunities in nanoscale science and engineering at the DOE Nanoscale Science Research Centers and related facilities
  • Participate in the first national users meeting for DOE's Nanoscale Science Research Centers

The program will include:

  • Keynote presentations on nanoscale science and national competitiveness by John Marburger (Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy) and Ray Orbach (Director of the DOE Office of Science)
  • Science and industry sessions with keynote presentations by nanoscience and nanotechnology leaders including Nobelist Richard Smalley (Rice), George Whitesides (Harvard), Gabor Somorjai (Berkeley), Paul Alivisatos (Berkeley), Thomas Theis (IBM), Larry Bock (Nanosys, Inc.), and Scott Donnelly (General Electric)
  • Perspectives from key politicians including Senators and Representatives with oversight responsibility for science and technology
  • Agency presentations on the National Nanotechnology Initiative and research opportunities in nanoscale science including a panel discussion and question and answer session
  • A banquet including a presentation on future priorities for federal research by a leading political spokesperson
  • Poster presentations from the NSRCs including a student poster session
  • A users meeting with presentations by Patricia Dehmer, Director of the DOE Office of Basic Energy Sciences, and the Center directors

Background

Over the past year, a series of DOE workshops has been held across the nation to obtain input from the scientific community on future needs and priorities for nanoscale science user facilities. The response to these workshops has been overwhelming, with more than 2000 participants, mostly from universities. This is the largest response to date for any proposed DOE major facility initiative.

Based on the results of the workshops and extensive peer review, 5 DOE Nanoscale Science Research Centers ( NSRCs) have been planned. These centers will be collocated with major DOE synchrotron, neutron, and microfabrication facilities at Argonne National Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory/Sandia National Laboratories, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. They will operate as user facilities with access based on scientific merit.

Each center will have a distinct signature determined by the special facilities and competencies of the host laboratory. As a collection, they will constitute the world's most powerful array of capabilities for nanoscale science research. The Nanoscale Science Research Centers will bring together materials, chemical, biological, engineering, and computational sciences to address some of the greatest intellectual challenges of our times. Construction of the first center, the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences at ORNL, will begin in 2003, with other centers to follow in rapid succession.

This workshop is the first national users meeting for DOE's Nanoscale Science Research Centers. It will provide a forum for communication on nanoscience among agencies, policymakers, and scientific community. It will also provide a forum for discussion of user policies and research opportunities in nanoscale science.

Venue

The workshop will be held at the Renaissance Hotel, located midway between the White House and Capitol Hill at 9th Street and L in downtown Washington, D.C. The hotel is several blocks north of the Gallery Plaza-Chinatown Metro station (on the Yellow and Red Lines) on 9th Street.

A limited number of rooms at the Renaissance are available at the prevailing government rate. These rooms must be reserved no later than January 27, 2003. Room reservations may be made on-line, with Renaissance Worldwide reservations at 1-800-HOTELS-1, or directly with the hotel at 202-898-9000. The name of the event is "DOE Nanoscience Workshop."

Registration

For the full workshop, registration is $150. For one day (Thursday), it is $100. The registration fee is due no later than January 27, 2003.

Full registration includes participation in all sessions and events including a reception on Wednesday evening, lunch and banquet on Thursday, breakfast on Thursday and Friday, and refreshments at morning and afternoon breaks. One-day registration includes participation in the sessions, lunch, and refreshments on Thursday.

Registration is available on-line. Late registrations will be accommodated on a space available basis only.
