Addendum: Looking for method to scan for bad blocks.

My thanks to all who have replied thus far.   A few people have
suggested using scu, but the man pages for scu state:    

"Data corruption can occur when the write back cache is enabled using
the scu utility. Do not enable the write back cache."

I had another suggestion for using the dd command, but I'm thinking that
would require me to have a large area to copy to and for a large drive
it would take a long time and require a lot of space.

Any other thoughts on this, please?
