downloading wavs

I have a problem downloading wavs.  I find a wav, click on file, click
on "save as" and click on "OK".  The wav is then filed in a way that my 
computer says is "an invalid" wav and cannot be replayed.  I have tried
re-naming and associating to no avail.  Needless to say, I am quite the 
novice and I imagine that this is a simple problem to correct.  If you  would
be so kind as to give me step-by-step insturctions, I would be appreciative.
