xdvik/dvipsk compilation problem

Dear all,
I am having a problem compiling dvips and xdvi under OSF/1 v3.0.

I realize this has probably been discussed before but I am not
aware of the solution. The problem seems to be with the compilation
of the kpathsea library. The folowing error message appears:

cc  -I. -I./../kpathsea   -I.. -I./../kpathsea/..     -DDEFAULT_FONT_SIZES='"300:600"'  -g -DLONG_64_BITS -DNO_FOIL_X_WCHAR_T  -c ./../kpathsea/tex-file.c
/usr/lib/cmplrs/cc/cfe: Error: ../kpathsea/lib.h, line 98: redeclaration of 'basename'; previous declaration at line 199 in file '/usr/include/string.h'
extern const_string basename ();
--------------------^
/usr/lib/cmplrs/cc/cfe: Error: ../kpathsea/lib.h, line 98: Incompatible function return type for this function
extern const_string basename ();
	-----------------------------^
*** Exit 1
Stop.

Can anyone point me to a solution or what I have not done properly in
the configuration. The same error message is given when compiling both
packages. I have successfully compiled web2c (with kpathsea lib, of
course) and got no problems.

Thanks,
Steve.
