Thanks a lot to all who replied to my question on how to
use an Alpha as an internet gateway.

The simple, and right answer, came from Dave Cherkus,
(thanks Dave) who wrote:

=>Most common problem here is that you must make ROUTER="yes"
=>in  /etc/rc.config then reboot...

Other replies show that the question of routing is not
clearly understood by many of us. Could anybody point
to a good reference on this topic, electronic or in paper?
