I have discovered "munin" a while ago.
    http://munin.projects.linpro.no/
It is a framework for rrdtools and defines kinda interface for plugins.
You can even use it across the network, define alerts and send them
to nagios.
I comes with a set of plugins already installed and you can find more at
    http://muninexchange.projects.linpro.no/

The newest version looks even more promising (and nice, with the ability
to define your own color palettes)
