There is a config setting in SquirrelMail to use SMTP or /usr/sbin/sendmail:

SquirrelMail Configuration : Read: config.php (1.4.0)

Server Settings

General
-------
1.  Domain                 : example.com
2.  Invert Time            : false
3.  Sendmail or SMTP       : Sendmail

I have used both successfully so I'm putting my vote behind your not-so-wild guess number (1).
