Martin,
I have the same problem occuring on a few of my qmail installs which use
different DNS servers. I believe that there is some sort of issue with the
service providers DNS. I have not had any issues up until recently, and I
have had the problem in more than one location.
To solve this problem, you can turn reverse DNS lookups off - everything
will work just peachy after you do that. I am not happy with that solution,
as I would like to know the problem, but other people have mentioned this
issue on the qmail list before (about 2 weeks ago) and they were not taken
very seriously. Nothing changed on my end, but something weird was
happening with the service providers DNS, (Road Runner was one of them,
Choice One was another) to fix it follow the instructions in seciton G.10 of
the life with qmail faq http://www.lifewithqmail.org/lwq.html#smtp-slow
This will turn reverse-DNS lookups off, and your qmail smtp functionality
will be back!
