You missed the bit where I (and the maildir2smtp man page) said to use
control/virtualdomains to route all outgoing messages to a maildir.

I've just sent Dan a patch that implements control/failhosts, which is
just like sendmail's FallbackMXhost option (except that you can specify
more than one failhost).  Maybe he'll incorporate it into the next
version...
