reclaiming space in /usr directory

Hi,
The /usr directory of my DECStation 5000/133 keeps expanding and its 
reaching the 100% usage mark. I tried to erase some 'big' files by 
"rm" them but the size doesn't seem to change at all. May I know how 
could I reclaim the space and which files should I delete if I have to 
manually remove them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
