Physical Sciences

Commercialization falls into five research areas: Chemical Sciences; Metals and Ceramics; Physics; and Solid State and Inorganic Membrane Technology. See available technologies.

Chemical Sciences Division: Emphasis is given to analytical chemistry, and the specialty areas of radiochemistry, geochemistry and materials chemistry are well represented. Experimental research activities are complemented by theoretical and computational approaches.

For more information, please contact the commercialization manager.

Metals and Ceramics Division: Basic and applied research programs are focused on the thrust areas of high-temperature design, structural ceramics, and radiation effects.

For more information, please contact the commercialization manager.

Physics Division: Concerned primarily with studies of the fundamental properties of matter at the atomic, nuclear, and subnuclear level, and the development of experimental devices in support of these studies.

For more information, please contact the commercialization manager.

Condensed Matter Sciences Division: The Condensed Matter Sciences Division is organized into five major sections: Solid State Theory; Neutron Scattering; Ceramics and Interfaces; Particle-Surface Interactions; and Thin Films and Microstructures.

For more information, please contact the commercialization manager.

Inorganic Membrane Technology Laboratory: Versatile IMTL inorganic membranes offer solutions to challenges in

  • the oil and petrochemical industry, reducing production costs by capturing reusable by-products;
  • fossil fuel energy production, cleaning coal of impurities and improving fuel efficiency and air quality;
  • natural gas exploration, efficiently removing impurities and moisture;
  • pulp and paper manufacturing, reducing the amount of chemicals released to the environment; and
  • water cleanup/purification, producing potable and process grade water for industry and municipalities.
