Abstract

Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of acquired blindness among Americans under the age of 65. Diabetes causes areas of the retina to become oxygen-deprived. Consequently, new, fragile, vessels develop as the circulatory system attempts to maintain adequate oxygen levels within the retina. This process is called neovascularization. Blood may leak into the retina and vitreous, causing spots or floaters, along with decreased vision. Clinical journals state that oxygenation of the retina has recognized therapeutic use in retinal vascular occlusive diseases and retinal detachment. The goal of this proposal is oxygenation of the retina for prevention of neovascularization and blindness.
