Research Reactors
Division (RRD) in the development and implementation of a
Quality Assurance Services that is
compliant with 10CFR830, Subpart A and
promotes safe and effective
nuclear
reactor based research and isotope production.

These pictures show the front/ internal parts that went into HB-2 of
the upgardes for the HFIR. The beryllium parts are inside of an aluminum
can that is very thin(.020 thick) and the shims are used to check the gap
between the beryllium parts inside and the outer skin.
Capabilities
The RRD Quality Assurance Group has provided professional quality
engineering and quality inspection services in support of RRD since
1987. Specific
services include:
- quality assurance program development,
- quality engineering of program provisions into implementing procedures
and processes
- fitness for use verification of items made for use in RRD reactor
facilities,
- inspection activities including visual, leak testing, dimensional,
hardness, and materials verification
- source inspection of critical fabrications,
- verification of operations critical activities,
- surveillances of on-going quality effecting activities,
- supplier evaluations/audits for safety related products and services,
- administration of the Nonconformance Reporting and Deviation programs
activities, and
- liaison with the
Quality Services Division
and other Laboratory quality programs.
The RRD Quality Assurance Group is responsible for the implementation of the
Department of Energy's Quality Assurance Rule provisions and the
ORNL Quality Assurance Program through RRD procedures and process
systems.
Quality People
The Research Reactors Quality Assurance Group is staffed by degreed and non-degreed
professionals who hold a number of professional credentials, including:
- Licensed Professional Engineer
- ASQ Certified Quality Engineer
- ASQ Certified Quality Auditor
- ASQ Certified Mechanical Inspector
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector
- ISO-9000 RAB Certified Quality System Assessor
- SNT-TC-1A Level II Certification in multiple inspection techniques
The staff has extensive experience in the nuclear industry including
Naval Nuclear Propulsion and Commercial Nuclear Power design,
construction,
testing, operations, waste handling, and regulatory compliance
activities. The staff is also represented on a national standards
organization developing
standards for application at research reactors the world over.
