Construction Surveillance and Inspection

Construction surveillance
is performed for customers wanting assurance that the project is being constructed as designed and are receiving full benefit of their investment. Inspections are performed for activities in areas such as new facility installation, facility modification, work for others, and repair of existing facilities. Work for others includes interstate natural gas and petroleum product transmission lines repair and new line installation.

These inspections are performed by personnel who are: certified by the American Welding Society (AWS-CWI); certified Level II for nondestructive examination; and certified by the American Petroleum Institute.

Nondestructive Examination

Nondestructive examination (NDE)
services are provided to ORNL R&D divisions as well as to construction and fabrication activities. Shop capabilities include fluorescent liquid penetrant examination, helium bombing, immersion ultrasonics, X-ray examination, gamma radiography, eddy current, magnetic particle and dimensional. Field capabilities include gamma radiography, contact ultrasonic examination, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, and visual.

Safety Surveillance Inspection & Calibration

Safety Surveillance Inspection provides inspections of installed plant equipment, personal protection equipment, and plant mobile equipment for the purposes of assuring conformance to OSHA, ANSI, EPA, and ORNL requirements. Included are inspections of air filtration systems (portable and installed), respirators (masks and cartridges), hoisting and rigging, personnel lifts and fall arrest/restraints, pressure vessels (including pressure gauge calibration), and water quality (backflow preventers, containment dikes). Support services include scheduling, trending, status reporting, and records management.
