ORNL Black History Month 2002 -- Employee Profiles

Robin Bishop , Administrative Assistant in the Contracts and Procurement Division in Property Management, has been with the Division since May of 2001. Prior to this, she worked for 6 months at Betchel Jacobs in Maintenance. In 1993, Robin was hired by Temp Systems, Inc. to work in the Y-12 Career Center. During her employment with Temp Systems, Inc., she also worked in the Y-12 Travel Department and Office of Workforce Diversity where she assisted the “Take Our Daughters To Work” committee in 1994. In 1995, she was hired by Lockheed Martin Energy Systems and placed in Y-12 Central Staffing when it was located on the Turnpike. Later, she went back to the Career Center to help with start-up. Prior to getting laid off in 1997, Robin worked in Internal Staffing at Y-12 handling terminations. For three years, she worked for the President of a Transit company in Knoxville. There, she gained experience with Proposal writing, payroll and starting up new contracts in other states. Due to financial difficulties resulting in a RIF, Robin was laid off in 2000 and immediately signed up with Temp Systems, with hopes of getting to come back to what felt like “home” to work. Thus, she’s worked the full circle of what used to be just “Y-12, K-25 and now X-10”. “It feels good to be back home”, she says.

Robin is married and has 3 grown children and 1 granddaughter. She enjoys reading, cooking and outings with her family.

Joan E. Carrington, Assistant and Administrative Specialist to Director of Buildings Technology Center (BTC), Engineering Science and Technology Division, began employment with Union Carbide in 1978. Joan's career at the Laboratory has enabled her to work in many different roles that have enhanced her skills to be able to interact with DOE and the many sponsors on a daily basis that contact our BTC National User Facility. This is very vital to the success of our Center. Some of her job duties involve preparation of ORNL BTS DOE Summary Report that is sent to DOE on a monthly basis, which monitors the progress of the Laboratory's BTS programs. "My job keeps me very busy and I really enjoy the opportunity my division has given me to achieve such great heights." Joan was just recently recognized by Who's Who Historical Society and awarded the "International Who's Who of Professional Administrators." This award acknowledges her exemplary achievement and distinguished contributions to the business community. She will appear in the 2000-2001 edition. Joan is married to Roger Carrington and has two grown children and three grandchildren.

Joyce B. Echols Nuclear Science and Technology Division — Joyce Echols is an Administrative Support Assistant in the Systems Engineering and Analysis Group of the Nuclear Science and Technology Division. She is a native of Knoxville and has been an employee for 22 years. She previously worked at the K-25 site before transferring to ORNL in June of 1992. She is an active member of the Rogers Memorial Baptist Church, where she serves in several capacities. She is also a volunteer with the YMCA Black Achievers Program in Knoxville, and was the recipient of the 2001 Outstanding Community Support Award presented by the YMCA of Knoxville. She has two sons, Gregory (26), O'Brian (15), and one grandson Jordan (3) and is an active Soccer Mom. In her spare time she enjoys reading, shopping, playing computer strategy games, and working in her flower garden. "My daily meditation is that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

Wendell Ely currently works in the Operational Safety Services Division providing Industrial Safety and Industrial Hygiene support to the Facilities and Operations Directorate. Prior to this assignment, he worked in the Plant and Equipment Division as their Division Safety Officer/ Radiological Control Officer. Wendell joined ORNL shortly after earning a B.S. degree in Occupational Safety and Health from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in 1993. He is currently completing a M.P.H. in Occupational Health and Safety Management from Tulane University. Wendell is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. where he is currently serving as the Vice President of the Oak Ridge chapter. His hobbies include pick-up basketball, golf, and just "kickin' it" with his 1 year old daughter, Regan.

Al Guidry is the Small Business Program Liaison Officer and a Senior Subcontract Administrator for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Project. He is responsible for implementing the SNS Small Business Subcontracting Plan to insure small business companies are given an opportunity to compete for contracts on the SNS Project. Al resides in Knoxville with his wife Mary and is actively involved in the Oak Ridge community. He is President of the Atomic City Sportsmen Club, serving on the Executive Board, and attends St. Mary' s Catholic Church. He is a member of the East Tennessee Chapter of the National Contract Management Association and serves on the Board of Directors as well as being Chairperson for Employment. Al enjoys cajun cooking, pinochle, reading, and nearly all sports --- however, he is not a UT fan!!!

Gail R. Hamilton has been employed at ORNL since 1980. She works in the Ecosystem and Global Change Science Group of Environmental Sciences Division as a Sr. Administrative Staff person. Gail served on the Administrative Advisory Council for three years. She is the Chairperson for the Policy Committee at the Oak Ridge Preschool. She is married and has three children.

 

 

 

Ursula Henderson, Shadow Finance Officer, member of the Business and Information Services Division, began her employment 19 years ago, in the Health and Safety Research Division, presently known as the Life Sciences Division (LSD). Ursula's principal function of her position is to provide oversight for all finance-related activities within LSD. She holds a BS degree in rganizational Management from Tusculum College. She is married to Harvey Henderson and is the mother of three children, Jonathan 20, Urshea 17 and Cedricka 12. Her interests include traveling, reading and family. Her goal is to be remembered for her dedication to her work, family, and GOD.

Titonia (Toni) Sawyerhas been an employee of ORNL for over 14 years (11 years in the Environmental Sciences Division) and is currently the Staffing Assistant for the Spallation Neutron Source Project. Before working at ORNL, she was employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Headquarters in Washington, DC. Toni received a MMES Award in 1993 for outstanding administrative achievement, an ORNL World-Class Teamwork Award in 1994 for electronic publishing, and an LMER Award in 1999 for significant secretarial accomplishments, most notably her development of a computer training course (Human Resources Management - Management Overview) for SAP. She is married to Rev. Gregory E. Sawyer, pastor of New Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church in Knoxville. The Sawyers are the proud parents of Daniel (15), Whitney (12), and Joshua (8). At New Metropolitan, Toni is the Youth Director, Secretary, a member of the choir, and a Sunday School Teacher. Her favorite hobbies include writing and directing plays at church and supporting her children’s various school, church, and Little League activities.

Diana Tucker worked at the Y-12 Nuclear Plant during the Union Carbide Era. She has worked in the Nuclear Science and Technology Division (previously named Chemical Technology Division) for approximately six years. She finds satisfaction as well as a blessing to be able to connect with the different employees throughout the plant when performing her job duties as a secretary and the Division's key, space, and precious metals coordinator. She was born in Chicago, Illinois. Diana moved to Memphis, Tennessee where she met her husband, Anthony. They have three children, Trenata, Vashaun, Dwayne, and one granddaughter, 2-year old Delicia. Along with tackling her task as a mother, she quickly steps to the call of her church. She stated that she is constantly reminded through the the trials and tribulations of life that our main purpose of existence is to serve God. Diana has also added another task to her busy life, she is focusing on obtaining a BS degree in Information Technology.

Shirley Waters I am a native of Georgia. I began my career at ORNL in July 1976. I am a graduate of Savannah University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. I am currently a Technical associate with the Metals and Ceramics Division, Structural Ceramics group. My job responsibilities include providing technical support in the area of ceramics processing and microstructural analysis. I also supervise the Scanning Electron Microscopy Lab. I am very involved in my church, the West End Church Of Christ. and it's youth program. I enjoy reading and spending time with my husband Larry, daughter Connie, son Lyndell, and grandson, Jordan Lee.
