Return to Hispanic Heritage Celebration at ORNL

This event kicks off DOE-HQ Hispanic Heritage Celebration Month with the presentation of the DOE Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards for Achievement in Education. Awardees will be selected from nominations submitted by DOE Departmental elements and M&O/M&I contractors.
UPDATE! ORNL has a winner. Igrid Gregory from ORNL and Ana Gonzalez from ORO were selected for their outstanding educational achievements.

Dr. Loida C. Velázquez, Director of the High School Equivalency Program Project and Principal Investigator at the University of Tennessee, will present a brown-bag seminar on Finding A Voice: Latinas in the South, a chapter of the book "Neither Separate nor Equal: Women, Race, and Class in the South." Dr. Loida Velazquez has worked for the past few years on research report that focuses on a comparative research of Hispanic women in the South. By comparing two different groups of Latinas: highly educated professional Hispanic women and female migrant workers, this research aimed to illuminate similarities and differences in their acculturation process into the Southern cultural milieu. It is hoped that the results of this research will assist educators and researchers developing educational and social service programs to better serve diverse populations, especially Latinas.

Video: "The Latin American and the Caribbean presence in the USA". This program examines the impact that Hispanics in the United States are having on American society, culture, and politics. It looks at three groups: Cuban in Miami, Puerto Ricans in New York City and Chicanos in Southern California.
