

Evelyn Angel is Manager of Treasury Services/Payments in the Business Operations Division. In this capacity, she manages systems for checking electronic payments for ORNL. She has 15 years of company service. Evelyn is a member of the ORNL Federal Credit Union Members' Appeal Committee. She is a past member of the National Management Association. Evelyn's husband, Calvin, is employed by Bectel-Jacobs Corporation. Her hobbies include cooking, fishing, and reading.
W. George Askew is a quality assurance specialist with ten years of company service in the Quality Division. George has played key roles in several operational readiness reviews of major projects and operational startup or resumption operations at ORNL. He was instrumental in helping the first and only group in Oak Ridge Operations (the original five plants) to achieve ISO 9000 QA certification accomplish that recognition and maintain its certification to the present. George holds an associates degree in mechanical engineering technology and a BS degree in mechanical engineering. He also is a certified diesel mechanic. A member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church of Knoxville, he performs Christian outreach work for a five-community area in the vicinity of the church. This outreach includes driving a church van and teaching, tutoring, and working with inner city kids from the community, among other activities. He is married to the former Angela E. Allen of Memphis, and they have three children, Greg, 12; Zach, 8; and Vanessa, 3. His hobbies include collecting vintage mid- to late-1950s, 1960s, and 1970s muscle and sports cars and trucks.
M. Vanessa Black has been with the company for 11 years. She was recently promoted to Manager of the Guest Services/Foreign National Office which is a part of the Office of Science and Technology Partnerships organization. Vanessa has a BS degree Organizational Management from Tusculum College. Vanessa is involved in the Loudon County Historical Society and is involved in the following ORNL activities: Chair, Nonemployee Access Review Committee and Member, OPSEC Committee. She is also a member of the National Laboratory Immigration Forum and the American Council of International Personnel. Vanessa enjoys traveling in her spare time.
Janice J. Crippen is a buyer for ORNL Procurement. She has worked in Procurement for 5 years, and previously worked for 5 years in ORNL's Energy Division. Janice notes that many of the products and services that she procures support (or benefit) ORNL personnel, major research and clean-up efforts at the Lab. "It's exciting to me to have that behind-the-scenes involvement," she says. She holds a BS degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She is married and has three children. She is active in raising funds for schools and recreational programs. Her hobby is collecting Barbie dolls, and one of her major interests is trying to be a servant of God.
Dez Davis, a member of the Finance and Accounting Division since 1993, is a finance officer for the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and Fossil Energy program offices. Dez has a BS degree in accounting from North Carolina A&T State University, in Greensboro. One of the things Dez enjoys most about his experience at ORNL is the extracurricular assignments in which he is able to participate, in addition to his regular finance officer duties. He served as the general treasurer for the 1995 LMES United Way Campaign, which gave him an opportunity to interact not only with persons on many different job levels, but also with people of diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. He is the treasurer for New Covenant Baptist Church in Knoxville. Originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, he is the second of four children. He spends most of his free time reading and trying to get some exercise.
Johney Boyd Green, Jr., is a development engineer with ORNL's Engineering Technology Division. His educational background includes a BSME from Memphis State University and an MSME from Georgia Tech, and he is working toward a Ph.D. from Georgia Tech. A six-year employee at ORNL, Johney has enjoyed the experience of a one-year off-site assignment at Ford Motor Company. He has been selected to receive the Outstanding GEM (Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, Inc.) Alumnus Award by the year 2000 Black Engineer of the Year Awards selection committee. He is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers. He is married to Tonya S. Green.
Janice Greenwood is employed in the Computing, Information, and Networking Division. Janice began employment with Martin Marietta in 1989. She currently works in the UNIX Workstation Support group of the Networking and Workstation Services section at ORNL. She is a graduate of Prairie View A&M University with a BS in applied mathematics with computer science. She enjoys coaching youth girls in the basic skills and sportsmanship of basketball. Her other interests include kick-boxing, coaching and playing in the LMER/LMES softball and volleyball leagues, and digital and graphic arts. Also, she is a big supporter of women's athletics and the six-time National Championship Lady Vols. James A. Hall is ORNL's coordinator for the National Environmental Policy Act and the National Historic Preservation Act. He is an employee of the ORNL Office of Environmental Protection. He came to ORNL is 1979. James has a BS degree in biology from Knoxville College and a BS degree in food
technology and science and an MLS degree in library and information science from the University of Tennessee. He is president of the Finance Committee at Riverview Baptist Church in Lenoir City; treasurer of Alpha Mu Lambda Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and treasurer of the Association of Tennessee Alphamen, which represents the state of Tennessee in the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He is an active member of Project Alpha, which is a program geared to working with young men in teenage special relationships (Forgotten Partner). James is married to Doris Saundra. He is an avid reader, devoted
jogger, works out constantly, and loves fishing.
Elvira Mealer Hodges, a development associate in the Chemical Technology Division, works with the Radiochemical Technology Section providing technical support to ORNL's nuclear facilities. She previously worked for Research Reactors Division as a shift technical advisor and was the first woman to certify as a senior reactor operator on the High Flux Isotope Reactor. She has been at ORNL since 1990. She has a B.S. in nuclear engineering and an M.S. in industrial engineering from the University of Tennessee. Elvira enjoys speaking to groups about the advancement of women and minorities in science and engineering. During the past year, she made a presentation on that topic to UT's Minorities in Technical and Engineering Programs and delivered the Knoxville Women's Center lecture "Propelling Girls to their Highest Potential." She serves on the nursery staff at her church, Mount Calvary Baptist, and volunteers for readings and presentations at her daughter's school. She and her husband have two daughters, one almost 3 years old and one 4 years old. In her spare time, Elvira enjoys gardening, sewing, cooking, and planning play groups for her daughters.
C. Renae Humphrey, a secretary for the Chemical Technology Division, has been at ORNL for 10 years. She serves biannually as the symposium administrator for the Conference on Biotechnology for
Fuels and Chemicals. Renae has taught herself a number of computer skills, including working with
graphics and database softwares. By learning on her own, taking training courses, and with "pushing from co-workers and friends," she has built an extensive set of computer skills. She has an advanced background in computer database creation and is proficient in most graphics development programs. "Those who know me will verify that if there is something I don't know how to do, I'll keep attempting to learn how to do it until I can do it well," she says. Renae has a BS degree in business management from Knoxville College. Her community activities including participating in the Juvenile Diabetes Walk -for-the-Cure. As a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., she worked with her sorority behind the scenes for the March of Dimes March walk and raised funds for the walk. She is involved in a Zeta Phi Beta/March of Dimes effort to establish a Stork's Nest House, a facility that will track low-income mothers and their babies during their first years. The aim of the Stork's House is to help to lower Knoxville's infant
mortality rate. The program will provide health and wellness checkups, clothing and accessories, as well as parental training. She plans to develop a database for the venture. Renae is a member of Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, where she serves on the Hospitality Committee and as director of the Youth Praise Choir. She is an active member and assistant treasurer of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She is married to Leon Humphrey. They have two sons, Leon Jr. "Derrick" 3, and Leonard "Dre'" 7 months. Her hobbies include designing databases and Web pages, computer consulting for a couple of small businesses, listening to gospel music, and reading romance novels.
Marilyn E. Langston is an Information Resource Associate in the Toxicology and Risk Analysis Section of the Life Sciences Division. She has been with the company for 15 years. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. She serves on the Finance Committee at New Salem Baptist Church. She has an 8-year old daughter and loves to read in her spare time.
David Rupert currently serves ORNL as its Director of the Office of Workforce Diversity and Employee Concerns. David also performs an additional assignment as the Human Resources Generalist for the Advanced Materials Physical and Neutron Sciences Directorate. David has been employed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation since 1979. He has acquired a variety of experiences since his initial job as Employee Relations Representative. Other positions have included Manager of EEO Programs at the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Program Manager of Minority Educational Institutions for Energy Systems, Manager of the ORNL Office of Science Education and University Programs, and EEO Program Manager, Energy Systems. Prior to January 1, 1996, when Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) was part of Lockheed Martin Energy Systems, Dave was the Workforce Diversity Program Manager for ORNL. Dave graduated from Culver Stockton College with a B. S. in Social Science and from Northeast Missouri State University with an M. A. in Social Science. Dave has also served as a National Director for the National Management Association. His community involvement has included the Board of Directors of the Oak Ridge Boys Club, Treasurer of the Oak Ridge Chapter of NAACP, President and Treasurer of Youth Haven, Inc, and member of Oak Ridge Rotary Club. Dave lives in Oak Ridge with his wife, Sylvia, and teenage son, Michael.
Gwen T. Scudder, a secretary in ORNL's Energy Division, has been in the Energy Division for 5 of her 23 years at ORNL. She has a BS degree in education from Middle Tennessee State University. Gwen worked at the Laboratory while attending school. She received an Extra Mile Award in 1992 and a Lockheed Martin Significant Event Award in 1999. Her community activities include serving as a monitor for
recording for the blind and dyslexic at ORNL. She has a 16-year-old son and enjoys sewing and watching Harriman High School basketball games.
Linda L. Smith is an Air Compliance Specialist in the Office of Environmental Protection. Linda has a BS in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University and is working on her masters in Chemical Engineering at the University of Tennessee. She has 16.5 years experience interacting with ORNL, Y-12, and K-25 in various capacities. Besides being the Work Force Diversity alternate and representative for Office of Environmental Protection at ORNL for approximately 4 years, she has had many assignments. They include: responsibility for oversight of hazardous waste generator activities at ORNL and completion of Annual Hazardous Waste Reports for ORNL; computer-automated the Annual Hazardous Waste Report process to reduce the labor intensiveness and man-hours to generate the report; completed a Screening Level Cancer Risk Assessment of the ETTP TSCA Incinerator emissions; and performed air dispersion modeling to determine impacts of Incinerator emissions on the nearest resident and the most affected resident during unplanned Thermal Relief Valve events. While a Section Head in the Environmental Air Sampling Technology Section, she was responsible for environmental source sampling and ambient air monitoring services for the Oak Ridge K-25 Sites, Y-12 Plant, Paducah, Portsmouth and other DOE facilities. Linda offers this advice to other Afro-American employees: Your destiny or success in life is not dependent on what others think of you but only on what you think of yourself. She is a member of the St. Joseph House of Prayer where she teaches the New Christian Discipleship class. She is married and the parent of two children ages 7 and 10.
Twana F. Taylor is part of the Office of Quality Services. She has been an ORNL employee for 20 years. Her job as an inspection technologist involves conducting a variety of types of inspections, such as radiography, penetrant inspection, leak testing, ultrasonic inspection, and visual weld inspection. She is a certified Level II Inspector in Radiography, Liquid Penetrant, Helium Mass Spectrometer Leak Test, Visual Weld Inspection, and limited certification in Ultrasonic Testing. Twana has attended Pellissippi State Community College, Roane State Community College, and the University of Tennessee. She plans to begin a program at Cleveland State in May 2000. She is a member of the American Welding Society (AWS) and is a AWS-certified weld inspector. She is a member of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing and is the workforce diversity representative for Quality Services. A member of the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Niota, she serves as the youth director and as a Sunday school teacher, and sings in the church choir. She also is a member of the Loudon District Community Choir and the Unity Gospel Mass Choir of Athens. She has been married for 21 years to Russell Taylor. They have a daughter, Chyla, 18, and a son, Jason, 16.
Harold Toy, a senior engineering assistant with Robotics and Process Systems, is an 11-year veteran of ORNL. He has been awarded for his contribution to the Moble Automated Charaterization System Demo at the Hart Senate Office Building as part of the Environmental Technology Exposition, and he received an Operations and Support Award at the 1998 Awards Night ceremony for his contributions toward implementing ORNL's first remotely operated system to successfully clean waste from underground storage tanks. Harold holds an A.S. in electronic engineering technology from ITT Technical Institute and is a member of the ITT Alumni Association. Harold uses his computing skills outside work, also, He installs, sets up, and maintains the computers at his church, and he participated in the team effort to install and set up donated computers at Austin East High School. He is married and has two daughters. His hobbies include electronics, computers, basketball, and classic cars.
Ronnie Wagoner is acting Finance Manager for the Energy and Engineering Sciences section in the Finance and Accounting Division with 23 years of company service. She is a graduate of Alabama A&M University with highest honors and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is married and the mother of three children.
Mary L. Wells, an ORNL employee since 1991, works in the Research Reactors Division. She is the secretary to David Cook, manager of the Reactor Technology Nuclear Analysis program. Mary received an Awards Night Award for Operations Support in 1993. She graduated from Knoxville Business College in 1971. She is the public relations director for Rogers Memorial Baptist Church, where she also works as the superintendent of the youth Sunday school department. She is a member of the Black Cultural Exchange Center and the Spring Hill Elementary PTA. Her daughter Kimberly is a junior at Fisk University, and her son Isaiah is a fourth grader at Spring Hill Elementary School. Mary's talents and hobbies include singing, writing sermonettes, and directing inspirational skits. Her words to live by are "Reach for the moon in all you do. Even if you never touch it, you will still be among the stars."
Leslie C. Wilkerson is a member of the Robotics and Process Systems Division where she is a Secretary in the Division Office. Leslie has been an employee since December 1993 and was located at the K-25 site before transferring to ORNL in September of 1994. Leslie is a 1985 graduate of Loudon County High School and attended Draughon's Business College in Knoxville. Before coming to the Oak Ridge reservation, Leslie was employed by BankFirst of East Tennessee for five years where she held positions in Loudon, Lenoir City, and Knoxville. Her last position with BankFirst was as Head Teller at their downtown Knoxville office. Leslie enjoys gardening, preserving vegetables and fruits, cooking, movies, and most anything associated with computers. She makes her home in Philadelphia, Tennessee, where she is very active in her church and community events.
