During the week of May 10, a display will be set up at the entrance to the Cafeteria featuring items from Asian Pacific countries.

May 17-21, the Cafeteria will serve daily specials featuring Chinese, Japanese, Thai, or Indian dishes. .

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Program
Wednesday, May 19, 10:00
Weinberg Auditorium
A cultural awareness program which will highlight customs and traditions from India and China.
There will be presentions by Ashok and Kim Choudhury on Indian customs and traditions and by Abhijeet Borole on Cultural Folk Dances from India.
Jy-An Wang will also discuss Ancient Chinese Culture and demonstrate Tai Chi. An interpreter will be provided for the hearing-impaired and the program will be broadcast via broadband.

East Meets West. Or Does it?

Find out on Saturday, May 22 at 2:00 pm in the Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge, 300 S. Tulane Ave. There, Professor Yen-Ping Hao of the University of Tennessee will talk about "Chinese Culture and Western Culture." His 20 minute talk will discuss the similarities, differences, and interactions of the two cultures from a macro-historical perspective. There will be time for questions and discussion. Refreshments will be served following the presentation. There is no admission charge.

Professor Hao is a Lindsay Young Professor of History at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He is the recipient of the prestigious Newcomen Award 1971 and is a member of the Chinese Academy of Arts and Sciences, Republic of China. He is the author of many books and other publications on Chinese history and on the evolution of its traditions and culture.

The event is part of the celebration of Asian-Pacific Heritage Month and is sponsored by the East Tennessee Chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) and by Lockheed Martin Energy Research, Inc. OCA is a non-profit, non-partisan, national organization whose goals include a commitment to promote Chinese culture, participation in civic and community affairs, and equal opportunity and civil rights for Chinese Americans.

A Taste of Tai Chi!

ORAU Asian/Pacific Heritage celebration. Demonstration and instruction in Taoist Tai Chi presented by the Taoist Tai Chi Society Tennessee Chapter. Refreshments will be served. For more information, contact Roger Johnson at ORAU.

The East Tennessee Chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans will be participating in three areas: performing arts (i.e., dance/music), the field event, and the "Global Living" culture demonstration.
