G. GillilandR. G. (Gil) Gilliland is the Associate Laboratory Director for the Energy and Engineering Sciences Directorate of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. His career in the materials field spans more than 30 years of varied and diversified academic, research and development, and industrial management experience. Gillilands career includes a tenured professorship at The University of Wisconsin; an industrial consultant; General Manager/Vice President for Lukens, Inc.; Director of Research and Development for the Aluminum Company of America; and most recently, Director of the Engineering Technology Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He received a bachelors degree in chemical engineering and masters degree in metallurgical engineering from The University of Tennessee. He was awarded a doctoral degree in metallurgical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Gilliland has been active with the American Foundrymans Society; the Iron and Steel Society of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers; the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering; the Industrial Research Institute; ASM International; and American Welding Society. He is a registered professional engineer, holds several patents and published over 40 technical publications, all in the materials processing fields.
