Luke W Bertels

Eugene P. Wigner Distinguished Staff Fellow

Luke W Bertels joined ORNL in summer 2023 as a Eugene P. Wigner Distinguished Staff Fellow (DSF). He is working in the Quantum Computational Science group in the Quantum Information Science section, Computational Sciences and Engineering division, Computing and Computational Sciences directorate. His research focuses on the development of classical and hybrid quantum-classical algorithms to study the electronic structure of molecules with neural network wavefunction approaches. The goal of this research is to extend the reach of simulation towards strongly correlated systems relevant to green energy applications. His postdoctoral research at Virginia Tech in the group of Nicholas Mayhall focused on quantum chemical applications of quantum computing. Dr. Bertels is currently a member of the American Chemical Society and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and serves as a reviewer for several journals in the field of quantum algorithms for chemistry.
